Wellington Wingfoil /Windsurf & Kite Social

Come to our first Wellington wind sports social event at Plimmerton Boating Club. Catch up with fellow wingers, windsurfers & kiter’s & grab a beer or a bite to eat. There will be a second hand gear buy / sell / swap on too – bring any gear you want to move on. Tell your friends to come along if they’re looking at starting out. It’s a family friendly venue, so the kids can come along too. Weather permitting we are hoping to have a lunchtime sail at Plimmerton or Whiti before hand. Please share with others who may be keen to join the wind sports community.

ANNUAL EVENT IS ON!

This annual event is an all-inclusive event for sailors of all ages and abilities including windsurfers, foilers and wing foilers. We run a small sailing course, closer to shore for our Bronze Fleet windsurfers (learners) and bigger courses further off-shore for Silver and Gold Fleet sailors. Plus we will run a separate shorter course for our wing foilers.

We will have slalom races (fin, foil and wing), timed races (30min & 60 min), team relay racing, the Matakana Blast, a Gybe-Off and light wind match racing, all dependant on the conditions we get each day.

Entry Fee & Payment Details:

Pre-Sale Tickets = $75pp (must be paid by Thursday, 27 Nov)

Gate Sale Tickets = $100pp – on the day

Wellington Windsports Update

Thanks for those who have responded – not a lot of replies yet, possibly the wrong time for this so feel free to keep responding (earlier post below) – in the mean time if you are interested in lessons contact one of our instructors, and if you would like to promote or be part of a social gathering let us know too – we keen keep going informally/socially while we weigh up the options.

Wellington Windsports Association?

Wellington Windsurfing Assn. was deregistered during Covid and we are exploring options. We are still encountering people interested in trying windsurfing and wingfoiling so we are keen to retain a pathway for them to be introduced to the sport.

We are looking at setting up Wellington Windsports  to help newcomers into windsports through teaching, equipment and social activities, while also representing the sports in advocacy issues etc. when needed.

young woman learning to windsurf on the beachThe group could include all windsports (wind, wing and kite) but would expect those interested to manage their sports activities with support of the group. Social activities and advocacy for all windsports people could be combined where appropriate. In particular we are keen to see windsports instruction retained and extended to include introduction to winging.

We are looking for indications of interest from the windsports community, all the way from “yes, I’m interested, keep me informed”, through to “yes, I’d be happy help to getting started”.

The future of WWA part 2

The current plan is to close down WWA completely and transfer the remaining assets to Windsurfing NZ to hold in trust while the possibility of a new wind/water sports organisation in Wellington is explored. If a suitable organisation is created the assets will be returned, otherwise the assets will be transferred unconditionally to Windsurfing NZ for general use.

The future of WWA

Wellington Windsurfing Assn. has been deregistered as an incorporated society and is currently without a working committee. there are a couple of us who are defacto committee and we must decide where to go to now. The options appear to be:

  • Do nothing (not really an option)
  • Formally disband WWA
  • Restart WWA – form a committee, re-incorporate, move on.
  • Reinvent WWA as Wellington Windsports Assn. covering windsurfing, kitesurfing and winging in all their forms.

The possible reasons for keeping going in some form include social, environmental and advocacy – having a group to speak on behalf of our sport(s) could carry more weight in some situations (I’m thinking about possible Shelley Bay development).
